AUBURN – Florence J. (Porter) Sleeper, 98, passed away peacefully April 26, 2008, at Clover Manor, where she was a resident since 2003. She was born Dec. 15, 1909, in Houlton, to Robinson Alexander Porter and Lee Iantha (Jackins). She graduated from Houlton High School and continued her education at the University of Maine studying business courses. On Oct. 7, 1933, she married Alba Eugene Sleeper and resided in Presque Isle, until his death in 1996. Together they raised their three children, and a niece and a friend, Eunice Brewer. They spent summers at their camp on Cross Lake, where the entire family shares many memories. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, reading romance novels and crossword puzzles. For the past 11 years, she shared her love and hobbies with her great-granddaughter, Alexis. She is survived by a son, George R. Sleeper and his wife, Peggy, of Poland; a daughter, Mary Lee Berry and her husband, Butch, of Virginia Beach, Va.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband of 63 years, Gene; a son, John “Jack” F. Sleeper; a sister, Natalie Lund; and a brother, Frank Porter. At the request of the family, there will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held noon Saturday, May 10, at Evergreen Cemetery, Houlton.
