BREWER – Florence M. Dowling, 83, wife of the late James F. Dowling, died Feb. 4, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare center. She was born July 22, 1920, in Houlton, the daughter of Amos M. and Dora (Stockford) Starkey. Florence worked as a dietician for the Taylor Osteopathic Hospital, Bangor, for several years. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church, Brewer. She enjoyed gardening and crafts and she volunteered as a foster grandparent for several years in the Brewer school system. Surviving are one daughter, Dora Rexrode of Bangor; four grandchildren, Sara Rexrode of Bradford, Timothy Rexrode, serving with the U.S. Army in Kuwait, Rebecca Rexrode of Bangor and attending school in New York, and Andrea Rexrode of Vermont; two sisters, Myrtle Stanley and Phyllis Wallace, both of Tennessee; one brother, Frederick Starkey of Hartland; many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband in May 1995; a daughter, Patricia A. Dowling in December 1993; and five siblings, Violet, Edward, Rankin, Malcolm and Lottie. Friends may call 3-5 p.m. Friday at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, with the Rev. Peter Sprague, pastor of the Columbia Street Baptist Church, officiating. Burial in the spring will be at Woodlawn Cemetery, Brewer.
