BELFAST – Franceska “Frances” M. Umbreit, 92, of Northport, died Jan. 20, 2005, at a local healthcare facility. She was born June 20, 1912, in Regensburg, Germany, the daughter of Jakob and Maria (Brukmueller) Rieger. Frances moved to New York City in 1935 and started working as a nanny. She was an accomplished seamstress and later owned and operated a dress shop. In 1954, she married Otto H. Umbreit in New York and in the same year they moved to Rockport where they ran a poultry farm together. In the early 60’s they moved to Austria where they ran a bed and breakfast for about 10 years. They then returned to Maine and settled in Bayside. Frances was talented artistically and loved spending time making hand crafts. She was an avid reader and an accomplished cook. She loved to spend time with her friends. Frances is survived by her husband of 51 years, Otto; her sister-in-laws, Herta Berthod and Eleanor Pedar; and her daughters, Vicki Pedar and Barbara Arocha; close family friends, Karl and Martha Beiser and their daughters, Marguerite and Natalie, Rodney and Susie Boynton; and a faithful friend and caregiver, Eunice Schleicher. A memorial Mass will be held in the spring at Saint Francis of Assisi at a time to be announced. Gifts may be made in her memory to the Belfast Free Library, Belfast, ME.
