INDIAN ISLAND – Francis D. Mitchell, 64, died July 27, 2005, at a Bangor hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was born Feb. 14, 1941, on Indian Island, a son of Daniel and Hilda (Gray) Mitchell. Francis was tribal chief of the Penobscot Nation in 1988 and 1996. He was a veteran having served with the U.S. Marines during the years of 1958-1963. Being a proud member of Ironworkers Local No. 496, he retired after a 30+ year career. Francis enjoyed hunting, boating, flying and recreational travel. He especially enjoyed time working around the house and being with his family. He is survived his wife, Edwina (Baer) Mitchell; four children, Ron Bear and his wife, Naomi, of Indian Island, Daniel Mitchell of Portland, Tammy Serra and her husband, Walter, of Falmouth, Ryan Mitchell and his wife, Charlotte, of Indian Island; nine grandchildren; two brothers, George M. Mitchell of Napa Valley, Calif. and David Crosby of Quincy, Mass.; two sisters, Clara Mitchell of Indian Island, and Andrea Mitchell of Portland; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father. The family wishes to thank all the doctors and nurses of Cancer Care of Maine and the Grant 6 staff for their care and compassion shown to Francis. A celebration of his life will be conducted 12:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, Indian Island, with the Rev. Paul Kerns, celebrant. Burial with military honors will follow at the family residence on Oak Hill Road. Arrangements by Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town. <
