VERONA – Franklin P. Eggert, PhD., 83, died Oct. 21, 2003, at a Bangor health-care facility. He was born May 13, 1920, in Buffalo, N.Y., the son of Paul and Florence (Graf) Eggert. Dr. Eggert grew up in Westfield, N.Y., on a fruit farm. He graduated from Cornell University with a degree in Pomology and then served in the U.S. Marines during World War II. After the war he returned to Cornell University and earned his PhD. in Ornamental Horticulture. Upon graduation he moved to Maine to accept a position at the University of Maine. He served on the faculty from 1949-1986, and from 1962-1975, he served as the Dean of the Graduate School. Following his retirement he established and operated an organic farm on Verona Island. During that time he was a contributing member of the Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association and also volunteered many hours with the Hancock-Washington Soil Conservation District. He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Eccles) Eggert of Bangor; four sons and their wives, Paul and Karen Eggert of Portland, Michael and Rose Eggert of Burlington, Mass., Geoffrey and Harriet Eggert of Cape Elizabeth, Jonathan and Edythe Eggert and their son, Andrew Marsh, of Verona; one sister and her husband, Gloria and Ralph Wakely of Westfield, N.Y.; four grandchildren, Erin Brenner, Eliza Eggert, Jesse Eggert and Adam Eggert.
