SOMESVILLE – Franklin Stoddart Smith III, died Oct. 23, 2004, in his home in Somesville after a long illness. Mr. Smith was born in Montclair, N.J. on Sept. 1, 1921, to Franklin Stoddart and Virginia Ellingwood Smith. He was a Veteran of World War II, serving as a Quarter Master in the U.S. Coast Guard. Stoddart Smith was an accomplished professional musician, performer, composer and choral director. He served as Organist and Choir Master at the Presbyterian Church in Caldwell, N.J., the First Presbyterian Church in Bethelhem, Pa., the Cathedral Church of St. John in Wilmington, Del., and St. Saviour’s Church in Bar Harbor. He was a music instructor at Cedar Crest College in Allentown, Pa. and performed with the Bach Choir of Bethelhem. In the 1970s, he taught chorus and was musical director for Mt. Desert Island High School’s Theatre Department. Stoddart Smith was a member and served as Secretary and Treasurer for the American Guild of Organist and the American – Anglican Musicians professional organizations. He was also affiliated with the Royal School of Church Music. After retiring from St. Savior’s Church, Stoddard and his wife, Audrey traveled throughout the state of Maine, repairing and tuning pipe organs. Stoddart Smith helped to found the Mt. Desert Sailing Association and was active in sailing and power boating in the local area. Franklin Stoddart Smith is survived by his wife, Audrey; sons, Dwight, Phillip, Mark, and their families; five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held 10 a.m., Monday, Nov. 1 at St. Savior’s Church.
