HOLDEN – George J. Cantwell Sr., 80, died Jan. 18, 2004, at a Bangor hospital from complications from cerebella ataxia after a seven-year battle. He was born Dec. 4, 1923, in Landaff, N.H., the son of Jim Cantwell and Lillian (Langtagne) Ennor. George and his brother were raised by his grandparents, Edward and Irene (Dunn) Langtagne. He worked at the Groveton Paper Mill in Groveton, N.H., for a number of years and upon his move to the state of Maine, joined the Laborers Union Local No. 1377 and worked for 22 years at various construction jobs throughout the area. George was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Brewer. A beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, George is survived by his wife of 51 years, Mildred (Thayer) Cantwell of Holden; their two daughters, Donna Hall and her husband, Dwayne, of Holden, and Debra Taggett and her husband, Charles Ivan, of Hampden; one son, George Cantwell Jr. and his wife, Debbie, of Hermon; six grandchildren, Suzanne Hall of Bangor, Chasity Dowling and her husband, Todd, of Hermon, Kim Cantwell and her fiance, Steve Moulton, of Glenburn, George III, Bret and Loretta Cantwell, all of Hermon; two great-grandchildren who brightened his life immensely, Alexis Dowling of Hermon, and Jordan Moulton of Glenburn; one sister, Margaret ‘Peg’ Goodspeed of Holden; brothers-in-law, Bud Dunifer, Alvin Thayer and Clyde Elston, all of Hermon; sisters-in-law, Eleanor Dunifer of Hermon, Frances Thayer of Hermon, Carolyn Bonney of Bangor, Beatrice Seger of Bangor and Wanita Ketch of Old Town; nieces, Freda Gass of Lakeland, Fla.; Barbara Jean Carpenter of Bangor, Lillian Ann Anthony and Margaret Ann Max, both of Pennsylvania, and their families; a special nephew, Jim Grant; and a family friend, Kristen Beaulieu. George was predeceased by his parents; stepfather, Louis Ennor; brother, Alfred Cantwell; sister, Mary Ann West; brothers-in-law, Lloyd West, Fred Goodspeed, Francis Milton, Nelson Jr. and Bernard Thayer; sisters-in-law, Margaret Elston, Marion Swoboda and Lee Dora Grant. A funeral service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday at Kiley Funeral Home, 69 State St., Brewer, where friends may call from 5 p.m. until the time of service. The Rev. Richard E. Harvey and the Rev. Katherine Fisk will officiate and spring burial will be at Harts Corner Cemetery, Holden.
