MANSET – George R. Sawyer, 85, died March 13, 2004, at his home in Manset. He was a direct descendent of the Gilley’s of Bakers Island. He was born Aug. 7, 1918, in Bernard, the son of Chester J. and Leona H. (Gilley) Sawyer. George was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He had worked as a carpenter during earlier years in the local boatyards, however for many years he worked for the Rockefeller Family. He was raised at McKinley Masonic Lodge No. 212 AF & AM in 1955 and had been a 49 year member of the Tremont Masonic Lodge No. 77 AF & AM. George is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Jennie (Soper) Sawyer; two sons, George C. Sawyer and wife, Grace, of Southwest Harbor and James B. Sawyer and wife, Cessie, of Manset; a sister-in-law, Kay Sawyer of Bridgeport, Conn.; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He also leaves cousins, nieces, nephews and dear friends. Friends are invited to call 5:30-7 p.m. Monday, March 14, 2004, at Jordan-Fernald, 1139 Main St., Mount Desert, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Dr. Wayne Buchanan presiding. Interment will be in the spring at Oak Grove Cemetery, Orland.
