MERRILL – George R. “Tuddy” Sawyer, 88, died Dec. 8, 2005, at his home with his family at his side. He was born April 22, 1917, in Old Town, the son of William and Annie (Roberts) Sawyer. George graduated from Old Town High School in 1935 and the University of Maine in 1939, with a degree in civil engineering, belonging to the Theta Chi Fraternity. He was also a member of the track and cross-country team. He worked for the U.S. Geological Survey. He married Jean Isabelle Grange, Oct. 12 1941, then served in the U.S. Navy as a Naval Communications Officer, serving on USS Logan APA 196 in the Pacific and Atlantic. Returning from the war, he and his wife took over the Grange Farm while still practicing land surveying in the Southern Aroostook area. In 1963, he became a MDOT Construction Inspector working statewide, retiring in 1981. He was a member of the Island Falls Masonic Lodge No. 206 and the Royal Arch Masons. In addition to his wife of 64 years of Merrill, he is survived by four children, William Sawyer of Palermo, George and his wife, Jane Sawyer, of Sweden and their children, Luke and Hannah, Michael and his wife, Cheryl Sawyer, of Merrill and their children, Nathan, Daniel and Patrick and Mary Anne S. Hare and her children, Jennie and Annie. His three rays of sunshine were his great-grandchildren, Kelsey, Tanner and Lily; and his four-legged friend, Yeager. He was predeceased by his parents; two brothers, Ralph and Charles; one sister, Almeda; and one son-in-law, Michael A. Hare in 2001.
