MACHIAS – George W. Thurston, 85, passed away June 26, 2005, at his home. He was born May 2, 1920, in Steuben, the son of the late Cleveland and Marion (Haskell) Thurston. George served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a graduate of Bowdoin College and attended graduate school at the University of Maine and the University of Pennsylvania. George married Ruth Smart on June 17, 1951. During his life, George served as the principal at Sumner High School in Sullivan, worked as head counselor at Camp Tall Timbers in Casco for 20 years, and was an assistant professor of history at the University of Maine in Machias from which he retired in 1985. George was an avid reader. He also enjoyed fishing, gardening, and was a Red Sox fan. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ruth V. Thurston; children, Margaret H. Thurston of Edgewater, Md., Thomas W. Thurston of Spokane, Wash., Elizabeth C. Thurston of Cape Elizabeth, Catherine M. Kotredes and husband, James, of Brewer, Ellen M. Bourett of Newark, Del., and Sarah J. Thurston of Maynard, Mass.; six grandchildren, Jessica Roberts and John Thurston, both of Spokane, Wash., Kevin, Edward, and Michael Kotredes, all of Brewer, and Amy Bourett of Newark, Del.; one great-granddaughter, Kayla Jamie Roberts; brothers, David H. Thurston and wife, Marie, of Clio, Mich., and Richard Thurston of Steuben; and several nieces, nephews, and many friends. At George’s request there will be no visiting hours. A service will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the care of Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, Machias.
