CHERRYFIELD and PORTLAND – Gerald C. Cohen, 88, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at Seaside Rehabilitation Community, Portland. He was born March 19, 1919, in Portland, the son of Morris and Alice (Modes) Cohen. Jerry graduated from Portland High School and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a musician and piano teacher, teaching at Starbird’s for many years before starting his private piano lessons. Jerry was well known as one of Maine’s finest jazz pianists and he was a longtime member of the Mal Lary Trio and Joe Dunn Trio. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 16 years, Georgianna (Griffin) Cohen; one son, Robert Cohen and his wife, Fran; grandchildren, Shawn Cohen and his wife, Jeanie, Jeffrey Cohen and his wife, Paula, Jennifer Cohen and Joel Cohen; two stepsons, Kenneth McNeil and wife, Linda, and Gary McNeil and his wife, Brenda; a stepdaughter, Shirley Ann Rogers and her husband, Larry; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Adele Mack and her husband, Richard, and Selma Pluznick. He was predeceased by his wife, Perle; a brother, Arnold Briggs; a son, Stephen Joel Cohen; and a brother-in-law, Oscar Pluznick. A memorial service will be held at a later date.
