GERALD GIBSON BEVERAGE ROCKLAND – In the presence of family, Gerald Gibson Beverage, 94, died Sept. 4, 2008, at Peno-bscot Bay Medical Center, Rockport. He remained vital and engaged to his final day. Born Aug. 21, 1914, at Pulpit Harbor, North Haven Island, he was the son of Albert L. and Julia P. Beverage. He was educated on the island through graduation from high school in 1932, and subsequently earned degrees in general engineering from the University of Maine, Orono, in 1936 and in law from Yale University in 1942. In the interven-ing years, he was employed by Central Maine Power Co., Rock-land. In 1942 he married the late Viola Joy of Rockland, a marriage that lasted 63 years. After a brief employment with Monsanto Chemical Co., he entered the U.S. Navy in December 1942. He served in the Pacific Theater of Operations on board the USS Simon Bolivar, an amphibious assault transport. The ship participated in naval operations at Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands, Saipan, Guam, the Philippines and Iwo Jima. He was released from active duty in late 1945 as a lieutenant. In 1945 he was admitted to the State of Maine Bar and was re-employed by Central Maine Power Co., CMP, as a claims adjuster and right of way buyer. He retired from CMP in 1979 as assistant treas-urer and manager of real estate. As a youth he had many interests, including Boy Scouts. His involvement in Scouting carried into his adult life when he served as a Scoutmaster, was a member at large of the Pine Tree Council Boy Scouts of America and was awarded the Silver Beaver Award for distinguished service to boyhood. He and Mrs. Beverage were longtime residents of Augusta, where they raised their two children, Parker and Clare.
