LUCERNE-IN-MAINE – Gerald “Jerry” P. Bowie went to be with the Lord, Aug. 27, 2005, at his lakeside home. He was born Jan. 5, 1940, in Lewiston, the son of Philip and Harriet (Hall) Bowie. Jerry graduated from North Yarmouth Academy in 1958. In 1962, he graduated from the University of Maine in civil engineering, following a career as a professional engineer with the USDA-SCS for 27 years. In later years, Jerry worked for the city of Richmond, Va. for five years, the city of Brewer as the director of public works. He continued to stay active as a consulting engineer for multiple projects including Trenton Airport Rebuild, Bangor International Airport and University of Maine. Jerry was also very active in youth and civic groups, 4-H, the Lions Club, Rotary and as a Cub Scout Master with his sons. He was a true outdoorsman; he loved hunting, fishing with his loyal dogs, farming and also enjoyed tinkering with old vehicles with his sons. He was devoted to family, church and country. Attending his children’s sports events was a great pleasure for him. He was very active as a volunteer firefighter. His love of sports, basketball and his years at UMO running track and field were a joy to him. Jerry was a member of the Maine Coast Baptist Church of Ellsworth. In addition to his mother, Harriet of Yarmouth, he is survived by his loving wife of 45 years, Lois (Mansfield) Bowie of Lucerne-in-Maine; four sons, David G. Bowie and his wife, Patsy, of Delaware; Robert M. Bowie and his wife, Lori, of Orono and Richard S. Bowie of Orono and James J. Bowie and wife, Debbie, of Brewer; one daughter, Cheryl L. and her husband, Glenn Chalkley, of Pennsylvania; three brothers, Rodney and his wife, Etta Bowie of Connecticut, Joel Bowie of Bath, Richard and his wife, Travis Bowie of Massachusetts; two sisters, Judy and her husband, Ed Rowan of New Hampshire, Kathy and her husband, Gordon Blake; 12 grandchildren, Christopher, Justin, Jeremy, Michael, Cameron, Thomas, Emily, Aidan, Meaghan, Isabelle, Riley and Owen; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Sept. 2 at the Maine Coast Baptist Church, Ellsworth with the Rev. Gerry Dill, pastor officiating. Interment will follow at 3 p.m. in the Mount Hope Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, friends who wish may make donations to New Hope Hospice, Eddington, ME 04429.
