KNOX-Gertrude Shibles died Oct. 16, 2005, in Belfast. She was born Aug. 22, 1911, in Freedom where she grew up and attended local schools. She graduated from Freedom Academy and attended several summer sessions at Farmington State Normal School (University of Maine at Farmington). Her first teaching position was in a one-room school on Frye Mountain. She married Mason Shibles in 1931, and moved to the farm at Knox Station. Once her family was raised, she attended classes at the University of Maine and resumed her teaching career, holding various positions in MSAD No. 3. Gertrude was active in numerous community affairs and organizations over the years, including the Grange, 4-H Clubs and the extension service. Her husband, Mason, passed away in 1987. She is survived by her two sons, Richard and Philip, their spouses; and her daughter, Carlene; as well as five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Emma Stevens of Unity; and several nieces and nephews. At Gertrude’s request, a public graveside service will be held 5 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 20, at the Knox Station Cemetery. Friends are invited to a lunch at the Grange Hall following the service in Gertrude’s memory. In 1991, on her 80th birthday, a scholarship was established in Gertrude’s name for a graduating senior at Mount View High School.
