MILLINOCKET – Gloria M. Ferland, 80, wife of the late Melvin “Dick” Ferland, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2007, at a Houlton health care facility. She was born July 14, 1927, in Millinocket, the daughter of Edwin and Evelyn (Handy) MacKenzie. Gloria was educated in East Millinocket schools, and was a graduate of Schenck High School. She was an undergraduate of Boston College with a bachelor’s degree in English and a graduate of the University of Maine with a Ph.D. in reading. Gloria taught school in Millinocket for many years, and also for various colleges throughout the state. She returned to Millinocket and was the director of reading in the Millinocket school system, and also served on the school board for several years. Gloria was recognized with many awards at local, state, and national levels for her efforts and accomplishments as an educator. Upon retiring from her career in education, Gloria opened her own business, Read Inn, Millinocket, which specialized in helping people improve their reading and study skills and attain their G.E.D. She will be remembered by many people for her ability in teaching them how to read. Gloria is survived by a son, Wayne Ferland and his wife, Elaine, of Millinocket; two grandchildren, who were extremely special in Gloria’s eyes, Brent Ferland of Bangor, and Ashley Ferland of Millinocket; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by two sisters, Tori Chappel and Marjorie Harrison. Gloria will also be missed by her very special caregivers, Kelly Coon and Nicki Fiske. Graveside services will be held 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 17, at Millinocket Cemetery with the Rev.
