He was born Aug. 3, 1917, in Old Town, the son of Stanley and Marjorie (Stormann) MacMillan. Mac’s father, Stanley, worked for Canadian & Pacific Railroad, and was transferred from Brownville Junction to Trenton, Ontario, and his family moved when he was a young man to Canada. He enjoyed spending summers working on his grandfather, Gus Stormann’s farm, therefore keeping his Maine ties. After graduation from Trenton High School in 1935, he attended Farmington Normal School, graduating in 1938. After World War II, he returned to college and obtained a master’s degree in education from the University of Maine. He started his illustrious career as an educator in 1939 at Magalloway Plantation. While there, he taught 10 students of varying grades, 26 subjects, and was also the school janitor and principal. During the following years, he taught school in Houlton, Stonington and Orono. After changing professions to the insurance industry with Metropolitan and Prudential, in the late ’40s and early ’50s, he finished his teaching career as a physics instructor at Bangor High School, from 1955 to 1968. Mac served his country as an Air Force officer in World War II for three years and another three years during the Korean War. Between wars and after, he was a member of Maine Air National Guard, retiring in 1965, as a lieutenant colonel. As an avid golfer, Mac was a member of Penobscot Valley Country Club. He enjoyed smoking his cigars and small wagers with his golfing buddies. He was past exalted ruler of Old Town Elks Club and state of Maine Elks. He is survived and will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 65 years, Phyllis Buchanan MacMillan of Dirigo Pines, Orono; three sons, Stanley and his wife, Marie, of Hampden, Stephen and his wife, Colleen, of Orrington and Thomas of Yarmouth; three grandchildren, Sean MacMillan of Bangor, Matthew and Rebecca MacMillan of Freeport; and two great-grandchildren, Collin and Ellie MacMillan of Bangor. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. Mac was predeceased by his parents; sisters, Hilda Forbes of Windham and Francine Gordon Stevens of Old Town; and a granddaughter, Heather MacMillan of Portland. His family thanks the staff at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor, for their wonderful care and compassion. You are all saints. Visitation will be held 4:30-6 p.m. Tuesday, July 1, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town.
