CASTINE and DEER ISLE Grethe L. Howard, 89, passed away Oct. 7, 2006, at a local health care facility. She was born Aug. 21, 1917, in Little Deer Isle, the daughter of Melvin and Carrie (Hardy) Bray. Grethe graduated from McKinley High School, Deer Isle and Eastern State Normal School, Castine. She taught school for 31 years, teaching at Sunset, Penobscot, Orland and Castine elementary schools. She is survived by her husband, Kenneth Howard of Blue Hill; one son, Richard and his wife, Sharon, of Blue Hill; one daughter, Janet and her husband, Robert Sundman, of Stonington, Conn.; five grandchildren and 11 great-grand-children.
