HOLDEN – Harlow “Joe” Floyd, 71, died peacefully, Wednesday, May 11, 2005, at his home in Holden. He was born March 9, 1934, in Dixfield, the son of Arthur and Alice Floyd. After serving in the U.S. Army as an Airborne Ranger as well as serving in the Korean War, he went on to earn a master’s degree in history from UMO. He taught and coached at John Bapst Memorial High School for 20 years and retired in 1996. He was the Executive Director of the Maine PGA for 20 years, served as Atlantic Salmon Commissioner for six years, was a member of the Atlantic Sea-Run Salmon Commission, a board member of Friends of the River and recipient of an AFS Roll of Honor Award, and a registered Maine guide. Throughout his life, Joe remained committed to his devotion to fly fishing and to the restoration of the Atlantic Salmon and the Penobscot River. In addition, he was a member of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife Advisory Council, as well as a board member of the American Chestnut Foundation. He is survived by his daughter, Kimberly-Jo Floyd; her mother, Kaye Floyd; a very special granddaughter, Kennedy Jo Floyd; three sisters, Sheila McKay, Gertrude Peabody, Ruth Webster and her husband, Louis Webster; one brother, Donald Floyd and his wife, Claudette. He was predeceased by an older brother, Arthur Floyd. Joe is also survived by his godsons, Kyle Raynor and Nate Brown; as well as his second family, Joan Frederic, her son, Larry Van Peursem; and daughter, Anastacia Hunton. Joe will be fondly remembered by the innumerable amount of lives that he touched throughout his life. A memorial service celebrating Joe’s many accomplishments, adventures and friends will be held 2 p.m. Sunday, May 22, at the Eddington Salmon Club, Rte. 9 in Eddington where friends and family are welcome to attend. A special thanks to Jeannie and Peggy at St. Joseph’s for their compassion and personalized humor that kept Joe and those close to him laughing throughout his final days.
