BREWER – The Honorable Harold Russell Cox, 81, died March 8, 2004, at a Bangor health-care center. He was born in Brewer, Sept. 25, 1922, the son of Harold Glenroy and Ina Mary (Looke) Cox. He was a graduate of the University of Maine with a BA and MA in Political Science. Russell taught at Brewer High School for a number of years and served in the Maine State Legislature from 1975-1985. He retired as a sergeant in the Maine Army National Guard. Russell was the original owner of Tree Farm No. 6, one of the first in Maine, and sold Christ-mas Trees for many years. Russell was the former market master at the Brewer Farmer’s Market for several years. He attended the First Congregational Church of Brewer, was a member of the Enterprise Grange of Orrington, and a member of the Brewer Democratic and the Penobscot County Democratic Committees. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Esther A. (Andrews) Cox; a son, Richard Cox of Modesto, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret Murray and her husband, Robert, of Bangor, Frances Cox of Bridgton; five grandchildren, Lindsay, Blaine, and Blake Cox, all of Modesto, Calif.; and Erin and Dillon Murray, both of Bangor; a sister, Mary Martin and her husband, Albert of Old Town. Calling hours were held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, March 12, at the First Congregational Church, Brewer, with the Rev. Constance S. Chase Wells, pastor, officiating. Interment will be later in the spring in Princeton.
