BREWER – The Honorable Harold Russell Cox, 81, died March 3, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare center. He was born in Brewer, Sept. 25, 1922, the son of Harold Glenroy and Ina Mary (Looke) Cox. He was a graduate of the University of Maine with a BA and MA in Political Science. Russell taught at Brewer High School for a number of years and served in the Maine State Legislature from 1975-1985. He retired as a sergeant in the Maine Army National Guard. Russell was the original owner of Tree Farm No. 6, one of the first in Maine, and sold Christmas Trees for many years. Russell was the former market master at the Brewer Farmer’s Market for several years. He attended the First Congregational Church of Brewer, was a member of the Enterprise Grange of Orrington, and a member of the Brewer Democratic and the Penobscot County Democratic Committees. He is survived by his beloved wife of 46 years, Esther A. (Andrews) Cox; a son, Richard Cox of Modesto, Calif.; two daughters, Margaret Murray and her husband, Robert, of Bangor, Frances Cox of Bridgton; five grandchildren, Lindsay, Blaine, and Blake Cox, all of Modesto, Calif.; and Erin and Dillon Murray, both of Bangor. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 11, 2004, at Brookings-Smith, Clark-Piper Chapel, 55 South Main St., Brewer. A funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Friday at the First Congregational Church, Brewer, with the Rev. Constance S. Chase Wells, pastor, officiating. Interment will be later in the spring in Princeton.
