HARRIS GOODWIN WHITED FORT FAIRFIELD – Harris G. Whited, 83, husband of Mrs. Frances H. Whited, died Th-ursday evening, April 22, 2004, at a Caribou nursing facility, following a long illness. He was Feb. 24, 1921, at Mars Hill, the son of Fred and Edith (Stackpole) Whited. Harris was a graduate of Ricker Classical Institute, Houlton, and the University of Maine, Orono, with a BS degree in Agronomy and was a member of the Phi Eta Kappa Fraternity. He was a pilot in the U.S. Navy, having served during World War II, having earned the rank of Lieutenant. Harris was married to Frances Houghton on Feb. 26, 1944. He had 24 years of farming experience as a potato grower and shipper, growing 350 acres of potatoes, peas and beets in the Fort Fairfield area. He was the former field supervisor and managed 1,000 acres of farm land for Vahlsing, Inc., Easton, and was also involved in potato buying for Vahlsing Inc.’s french fry plant. In 1981, he became sales representative for Maine Potato Growers, Presque Isle, responsible for sales of farm machinery, International Harvester trucks and complete lawn and garden line marked by MPG International throughout central and northern Aroostook County. He was a member of the VFW Paul Lockhart Post No. 6187, Fort Fairfield, and a member of the Aroostook Valley Country Club, Fort Fairfield. Upon retirement, he engaged in refinishing furniture. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Frances H. Whited of Fort Fairfield; one son and daughter-in-law, Thomas and Cynthia Whited of East Holden; three daughters, Carol Ann McElwee of Caribou, Kathryn Sunday and her husband, William Jr., of Franklin, Va., Priscilla Fields and her husband, Scott, of Fort Fairfield; one brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Edwina Whited of Bridgewater; two sisters, Lydia Baragar and her husband, William, of Indiana, Anne Duvall of Mount Laurel, N.J.; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be conducted 1 p.m. Monday, April 26, 2004, at Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Diane Langworthy officiating. Interment will follow at the Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. In lieu of flowers, those who choose may contribute in memory of Mr. Whited to the Fort Fairfield Public Library, 339 Main St., Fort Fairfield, ME 04742 or to a charity of one’s choice. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
