BAR HARBOR – Harvey Burton “Bert” Mitchell, 87, of Bar Harbor, died Nov. 4, 2004, at Maine Coast Memorial Hospital, Ellsworth. He was the husband of Kathryn Doody Mitchell, to whom he was married for 35 years. Harvey was born May 17, 1917, in Bar Harbor the youngest of nine children of Alphonso and May Norwood Mitchell. He graduated from Bar Harbor High School in 1936. He worked mostly on farms and in the woods until January 1941, when he joined the U.S. Coast Guard 10 months before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He served primarily in New York Harbor and the surrounding waters. He was honorably discharged in March, 1947. Harvey worked for the J. Rich Steers Construction Engineers as a Tug Boat Captain from March, 1947 until June, 1979. His work was primarily in New York Harbor, the Hudson River, Long Island Sound and the Delaware Bay area. In June, 1979, he moved back to Bar Harbor and retired to a portion of his father’s farm. He enjoyed working in his garden as well as cutting wood for himself and others. He was a life member of the American Legion, George Edwin Kirk Post No. 25 of Bar Harbor. He was also a member of the Bar Harbor Senior Citizens Group. He attended the Bar Harbor Congregational Church. Harvey is survived by his wife, Kathryn of Bar Harbor and his children from a previous marriage, George Mitchell and his wife, Billie, of Bar Harbor and Virginia Rogers and her husband, Clyde, of Zephyrhills, Fla. He leaves behind six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, as well as several nieces and nephews. Friends are invited to call 3-5 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 7, 2004, at Jordan-Fernald, 48 Eden St., Bar Harbor, where funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Monday, Nov. 8, with the Rev. Sandra Reed officiating.
