GREAT CRANBERRY – Hazel E. Peterson, know as “Snooks or Brookes”, 85, died peacefully in her sleep, Jan. 8, 2006, at a Bar Harbor healthcare facility. She was born June 23, 1920, on Cranberry Isles, the daughter of Enoch and Beatrice (Birlum) Stanley. During World War II, Hazel served with distinction in the WAC in various parts of the country and was honorably discharged. She married Paul Jackson, who was sent over seas and died in Europe, the father of Paul Peterson. In 1948, Hazel married Fillmore Peterson and he adopted Paul Jackson and they had a daughter, Catherine Peterson. When she was in New Mexico, she received her high school diploma and then went on to college at South University in Baton Rouge, La. Hazel always cared for others, among them, Margaret Millar, mother of her friend. She had a keen mind, a great sense of humor and a very generous heart. She is survived by her son, Paul Peterson of Arkansas and her daughter, Catherine Nelson of Lovell; two sisters, Nina Turner and Mae Joyce, both of Southwest Harbor; four grandchildren, Stacey, Eric, Gretchen and Molly Matthew; and one great-grandchild. Services will be private. Friends who wish may make gifts in Hazel’s memory to the fund which helps maintain the Stanley Cemetery on Great Cranberry, care of the Northeast Harbor branch of Bar Harbor Bank & Trust Co.
