HOLDEN and BANGOR Hazel Ernestine Conners, 86, wife of the late Albert L. Conners, died July 6, 2004, at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born Oct. 26, 1917, in Bangor, the daughter of Burt Westgate and Martha Ann (Ellingwood) Thomas. Hazel was a member of the Saturday Nighters, and a charter resident of the Sunbury Village. She was a volunteer at Eastern Maine Medical Center from 1958-1991. In 1980, she was added to the Volunteer Honor Board in the hospital lobby which lists volunteers with 3000 or more hours of service; in 1987 she was recognized for her length of service (30 years!) with an award. During her 33 years of volunteer service she accrued 7170.50 hours. She is survived by one daughter and son-in-law, Nancy and her husband, Lt. Col. retired Stan Van Horn; one grandson, Mark Van Horn, all of Holden; two nephews, Tom and Jeff Homsted; five nieces, Barbara Chamberlain, Becky Mushrow, Betsey Robichaud, Babette and Brenda Homsted; one uncle, Raymond Ellingwood; many cousins and friends. In addition to her parents and her husband she was predeceased by a sister, Bette Homsted. Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, July 8, 2004, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, July 9, with Pastor Maria Guereca, Chaplin at Eastern Maine Medical Center, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments immediately following the service Friday at the Brookings-Smith, Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Bangor. Gifts in her memory may be made to Heart Fund, care of Eastern Maine Charities, Eastern Maine Medical Center, P.O. Box 404, Bangor, ME 04402-0404.
