HELEN M. SMITH HARRINGTON – Helen (McHatton) Smith, 88, died Sept. 14, 2008, at Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility after a brief illness. She was born March 14, 1920, in Cherryfield, the daughter of the late Irving and Gladys (Brooks) McHatton. She and her husband, Gene, spent many summers at Cobscook Bay. They enjoyed camping and fishing. She was an avid reader, card player and Red Sox fan. Helen was a member of Harrington Get Together Club. She was a devoted member of Alcyone Chapter No. 71 of the Eastern Star, Milbridge, where she served as worthy matron and grand representative to Delaware. Helen enjoyed many lunches at the Whitehouse Restaurant with Evelyn and George Frye, Ginny Charles, Mel and Betty Beal, Margaret Dyer and Edwin Knight. Helen is survived by her children; two sons, Dean Smith and wife, Gloria, of Hermon and Arlo Smith and wife, Bonnie, of Perry; two daughters, Marie Murphy of Harrington and Rebecca Atwater of Steuben; 13 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren, six great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Jessie McHatton of Sorrento; brothers and sisters-in-law, Roland Smith and wife, Edie, of Machias, Perley Smith and wife, Ina, of Jay, Alton Smith of Westbrook, and Barbara Mitchell and Patricia Worcester of Harrington; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Helen was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Eugene E. Smith in July; brother, Dean McHatton; sisters, Marguerite Carter, Ethel McNutt, Bernice Faulkner and Aster McHatton; a son-in-law, Leon Atwater; and an infant grandson, Toby Smith. The family would like to especially thank the staff at Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility and the staff at Brewer Rehab for the loving care she received. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, Milbridge, where a funeral service with Eastern Star Rites will be held 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 17. Kendrick Randall will be officiating. Burial will be after at Forest Hill Cemetery.
