NEWPORT – Helen T. Melanson, 88, died Oct. 2, 2005, at the home of her sister after a long illness. She was born March 4, 1917, in Newport, the daughter of Guy R. and Mable Prescott Tardy. She was educated in Newport Schools and was a graduate of Newport High School, Class of 1937. Helen was a textile worker for many years working at Moosehead Woolen Mill, Eastland Woolen Mill in Corinna, and Wrights Woolen Mill in Pittsfield. Helen was an active and devoted Member of the American Legion Auxiliary No. 105 in Newport where she was a past president and was granted an honorary membership for her work. She married Ernest Melanson in 1954 and he predeceased her June 9, 1997. She is survived by two brothers, Raymond Tardy and Elden Tardy, both of Newport; three sisters, Mary Brewer of Corinna, Maude Smith of Newport and Janace Wesley of Lakeland, Fla.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 4, at Brown Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 34 High St., Newport.
