BANGOR – Helen (Young) Gillespie, 82, wife of the late Duff Gillespie, died Feb. 20, 2005, at a local hospital. She was born March 31, 1922, in Salt Lake City, Utah, the daughter of John and Pearl (Grundvig) Young. She graduated from West High in Salt Lake City in 1940 and then worked for a defense plant during World War II. She married her husband, Duff Gillespie in 1943 and they were married 55 years. Duff died in 1998. They moved to Orono in 1950, where she attended University of Maine and got her master’s degree with honors in government in 1960. Helen taught at Bangor High School for 22 years. Helen and Duff moved to Bangor in the early 1970’s where she resided until moving to Dirigo Pines in 2003. She is survived by her daughter, Shann Gillespie of Bangor; special cousins, Thelma and Lee Thiede of Camarillo, Calif.; many special friends; and especially her grandcat, “Sheba.” A service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor. Spring interment will be at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Bangor. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments at the Brookings-Smith Family Center, 163 Center St., Bangor, immediately following the service. Gifts in her memory may be sent to the Bangor Humane Society, 693 Mt. Hope Ave., Bangor.
