BOWDOINHAM – Henry P. McAvoy, 88, passed away Sunday, Jan. 11, 2004, with his family by his side. He was born May 6, 1915, in Benedicta, the son of Fenton and Ellen (Rush) McAvoy. Henry proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Henry married his beloved wife, Rosalie Carver, in 1943 in Bath, where they lived for 40 years before moving to Bowdoinham in 1981. He was known for his strong work ethic at Bath Iron Works, where he worked for more than 44 years as a driller and welder, retiring in 1981. After retirement he spent many hours working outdoors and clearing many acres around his home in Bowdoinham. Henry was a longtime member of St. Ambrose Church in Richmond, and the Knights of Columbus in Bath. He enjoyed working outdoors, reading western novels and especially time spent with family. Henry was predeceased by his wife, Rosalie McAvoy, in 1992; 11 brothers and sisters. He is survived by daughters, Sharon Dow and husband, Dennis, Muriel Vaillancourt and husband, Dan, all of Bowdoinham; son, Jason McAvoy and wife, Tish, of Scarborough; brother, Steven McAvoy of Patten; sisters, Nora Braswell of Virginia, Barbara McNally of Sherman Station; four grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Family and friends may visit 6-8 p.m. Monday, January 12, with prayers for the deceased being offered at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 13, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church, Richmond, with Father Angelo Levassuer officiating. Burial will take place in the spring.
