BREWER – Hilda Louise Callahan, 87, wife of the late James B. Callahan, died June 10, 2006, at a Bangor healthcare facility. She was born June 1, 1919, in Franklin, the daughter of Norris and Sophia (Clark) Savage. She graduated from Bar Harbor High School, Class of 1937 and was a graduate of Farmington Normal School in 1941, and later completed her bachelor’s degree at the University of Maine. She taught school for 11 years in a Bar Harbor elementary school and 21 years at the Washington Street School in Brewer. Hilda always joked that she never made it out of the 4th grade. She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword and jigsaw puzzles, as well as any kind of needlework. Hilda was a huge Red Sox fan and was thrilled to see them win the World Series. She will be remembered as a sweet, generous and loving woman to everyone. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Brewer, a charter member of Gamma Chapter of Alpha Delta Kappa sorority, a member of the NEA and MEA, the Penobscot County Retired Teachers Association and a 50-year member of the Unison Rebekah Lodge of Bar Harbor. She is survived by a nephew, Richard Savage and his wife, Dolores, of Massachusetts; a niece, Diana Gerard and her husband, Michael, of Maine and Florida; a great-nephew, Ryan Gerard of Phoenix, Ariz.; two sisters-in-law, several cousins and many dear friends. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was predeceased by a brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Ella Savage; and one great-nephew, Ross Gerard. A funeral service will be held 1 p.m. Friday, June 16, at Brookings-Smith, 55 South Main St., Brewer with the Rev. Dr. George Curtis III, pastor of the First United Methodist Church of Brewer, officiating. Friends may call noon until time of service. Interment will be in Bayview Cemetery, Franklin.
