PATTEN – Hilma D. Ambrose, 92, passed away May 2, 2006, at Patten. She was born Nov. 22, 1913, in Hillman, the daughter of Calvin and Mina (Lilley) White. Hilma spend a lifetime of years raising her family and working hard. She spent her childhood in Island Falls. She and her late husband, Leigh, raised two daughters in Sherman Mills. She loved to cook big dinners for the family, pick berries to make fruit jams, helped on church functions and taught Sunday school. She enjoyed gardening in her flowerbeds and spending time at camp on Perry Pond. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother who enjoyed her family around all the time. Hilma was a very generous person, always doing for others before herself. Her door was always open to anyone. She worked at many jobs throughout her life, including caring for the elderly and ill, working at the general store and retired from the U.S. Postal Service where she worked as clerk and O.I.C. at the Sherman Mills office for 33 years. She was well liked in the community and known to many even outside the family as “Gram.” She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends. She is survived by her daughter, Carole McLellan and her husband, Bertrand, of Naples and Delray Beach, Fla.; her grandchildren, Cindy Drew, Cheryl Anderson, Christy Fogg, Brenda Olsen, Bonnie Peirpont and Barry McLellan; her great-grandchildren, Cooper Drew, Nikolas Drew, Lindsay Drew, Lucas Anderson, Kate Anderson, Amy Rossetti, Bobbie Williams, A.J. Olsen, Tucker Olsen, Erin Peirpont, Eric Pierpont and Bryan McLellan; and one great-great-granddaughter, Natalynn Williams. Hilma was predeceased by her husband, Leigh Ambrose; her daughter, Linda Stevens; her son-in-law, Yale Stevens; four sisters, Gertrude Spearen, Millicent Varney, Clarice George and Eva Webb; and her parents, Calvin and Mina White. Service will be held 11 a.m. May 6, at the Washburn Memorial Church, Sherman Mills with the Rev. Dr. Jon Deal Burial will immediately follow the funeral service at the Sherman Mills Cemetery.
