OXBOW – Honorable Maurice D. Anderson, 90, died April 3, 2005, at a Presque Isle hospital. He was born Oct. 8, 1914, in Oxbow, the son of Hugh and Lena (Pelletier) Anderson. He served in the Maine Legislature representing the Ashland-Oxbow District of Aroostook County in the 90th, 91st, and 92nd Legislatures and in the 95th, 96th, and 100th Legislatures from the Greenville-Monson-Shirley districts of Piscataquis County. Maurice was a former chairman of the Republican Committees of Oxbow and Greenville as well as member and past chairman of the Piscataquis County Republican Committee. He retired from the Great Northern Paper Company in 1973 after more than 30 years of service. Following that retirement, he was business manager for the C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital in Greenville for four years. He served in municipal offices in both Oxbow and Greenville, where he was a member of the town council for seven years. While in Greenville, he served as town moderator for more than 25 years, as well as surrounding towns. He served as moderator in Beaver Cove when that became a plantation from unorganized territory, as well as when it was reorganized to the Town of Beaver Cove. For 18 years, Maurice served as member of the C.A. Dean Memorial Hospital Board of Trustees, 16 of which were as clerk and secretary of the executive committee. He was a charter member and past president of the Moosehead Kiwanis Club, charter member of the Maine Retirees Association, charter member of the Alaska Geographic Society and a member of the Alaska Airlines Arctic Circle Club-Nome-Kotzebue. He was a member of the Atlantic Salmon Association of the Upper St. John River Valley and charter member treasurer of the Oxbow Congregational Church. He was presently a member of the and past president of the Chesuncook Village Association. Maurice was a former member and past chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Greenville Evangelical Church, and a former member and treasurer of the Oxbow Congregational Church. He was presently a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Caribou. He was a life member and past Master of Masonic Pioneer Lodge No. 72 AF & AM of Ashland and recipient of the Grand Lodge 50 year veterans medal and pin. He was also a member of the Fort Kent Lodge No. 209, AF & AM and a life member of Scottish Bodies Valley of Bangor as well as a life member of the Maine Consistory 32nd Degree Valley of Portland. Maurice was a member of the Anah Temple Shrine and a life member of the Aroostook Shrine Club and life member and past secretary of the First District Masonic Association. He was a member of the Ashland Area Senior Citizens Club, a member of the Moosehead Historical Association, and a charter member of the Moosehead Coalition. In addition to his parents, He was predeceased by his wife of 41 years, Ruth (Duty) Anderson in 1986; one son, Ronald Anderson in 2004; and three brothers, Clair, Donald and Chester. He is survived by one stepson, Richard Hamlin and his wife, Elizabeth, of Cape Elizabeth; five grandchildren, Amy Anderson of Chicago, Ill.; the four “D”‘s: Donna and her husband, Michael Whelan, of Gilbert, Ariz., Diane Hamlin of Hallowell, Debbie and her husband, Tom Dyer, of South Portland, and David Hamlin of Phoenix, Ariz.; four great-grandchildren, Alisha and Thomas Whelan of Gilbert, Ariz., Zachary and Emily Dyer of South Portland; four sisters, Gertrude Christie of Mapleton, Bernice Greenlaw of Biddeford, Velma Sherman of Port Charlotte, Fla., and Margaret MacDonald of Thomaston, Conn.; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Relatives and friends may call at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Caribou from 10 a.m. Saturday until time of service. A Masonic service followed by a funeral services will be held at the church at 11 a.m. Saturday. Interment will be in the Greenville Cemetery later this spring.
