HOULTON and NEWCASTLE Horace “Herbie” Allen Ingraham, 100, died June 23, 2005, at the Lincoln Home, Newcastle, where he was a resident. He was born May 16, 1905, at Houlton, the son of Lemuel R. and Eleanor (Lyons) Ingraham. Herbie was a graduate of Houlton High School, Class of 1923, and went on to attend Houlton Business College. Through the Universal School, he took a course in Claim Investigation and Adjustment. In the early 1920’s, he worked as an automobile mechanic and machinist, then in 1930’s started to repair and sell outboard motors, boats and canoes. He sold the Evinrude franchise to Bernard Maher Sr., in 1952. In the 1940’s, he rented trucks to contractors for the Houlton Air Base, Birdseye-Snider General Foods and the local post office. He started to work as a substitute rural carrier and clerk in the Houlton Post Office in 1942, while working for Dr. Donald Ellis as an optician. He retired from the Houlton Post Office in 1970. For a few years, Herbie and his wife, Helen, owned and operated the Broadway Music Shop. His hobby of making rubber stamps for friends and local businesses turned into a 19-year business. Herbie was one of the founders of the Military Street Baptist Outdoor Church along with the Rev. Decker and Fremont Hand in 1958 and helped maintain it for about 20 years. He was a life-member of the Rockabema Lodge No. 78 IOOF having joined in March 1925; Encampment of Maine IOOF; Houlton Lodge of Elks No. 835; Monument Lodge No. 92 AF & AM Aroostook Chapter No. 20 RAM; Aroostook Council No. 16 R & SM; St. Aldemar Commandery No. 17 KT; secretary, Aroostook Chapter No. 20 for 19 years, Aroostook Shrine Club; Noble of Anah Temple Shrine; Sunshine Club for Crippled Children. In 1987, Herbie and Helen moved to Damariscotta to be near family. He leaves three daughters, Shirley Woodcock of Waldoboro, Eleanor Goach and her husband, Frank, of Sarasota, Fla., Hollace Lindsay Ingraham of Damariscotta and Farm-ington; a sister, Mrs. Ruth Fogg of South Portland; his grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Bailey of Owls Head, William A. Woodcock of Waldoboro, Helen Tetu of Brunswick, Michael Goach of Torrance, Calif., Patricia DesLauriers of Charlotte, N.C., Margaret O’Connor of South Portland, Timothy Goach of Cumberland, Kathleen Currie of Harleysville, Pa.; 23 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandsons; a cousin, Garfield Ingraham of Cousins Island; a special friend, Joe Hogan of Standish; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, Helen (Lindsay) Ingraham; brothers, Hillis, Eugene and Eldridge; sister, Anah Grant; and a granddaughter, Laurie L. Woodcock. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Evergreen Cemetery with the Rev. Gary Johnson and Masonic Lodge officiating.
