SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Hylie Kenneth Hall Jr., 69, died Oct. 8, 2003, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug. 21, 1934, in Bar Harbor, the son of Hylie K. and Thelma (Wallace) Hall Sr. He joined the Bar Harbor Police Reserve in 1967. This was the first police reserve in the nation. In 1969, he joined the Bar Harbor Police Force, where he served for 25 years. He also served five years with the Southwest Harbor Police Department. During his years of service, Hylie received many awards and certificates for his bravery. In 1969, he received a citation for bravery from the National Police Officers Association for rescuing a teenage boy from his burning auto seconds before it exploded and a commendation from the Bar Harbor Council and certificate from the Miami Police Hall of Fame for rescuing this same boy. Hylie was awarded a Certificate of Commendation from the Maine Chief of Police Association in 1973, for an outstanding act of bravery, saving the life of a young man by applying a tourniquet after this young man lost an arm in an accident and a citation for saving a man from drowning after a car accident, which ended in the salt water. In 1978, he received the Certificate of Award as Officer of the Year. Another incident happened in Bar Harbor during a winter blizzard. It involved a woman in a Pinto car with a flat tire. The temperature was 5 degrees below zero and the woman did not have a jack. Hylie lifted the car while the other officer put the wheel on and tightened the lugs. Hylie also received Officer of the Year in 2002, from the Franklin Veterans Club. He was a member of the United Bikers of Maine, the Franklin Veterans Club, Ellsworth Elks and the Fraternal Order of Police. Hylie had a passion for life, love for his family and friends and motorcycle rides. One of the biggest treasures of his life were his children and grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He is survived by his beloved wife, Carla (Swanson) Hall of Southwest Harbor and Florida; one son, Hylie J.K. Hall “Jim” of Bar Harbor; and two daughters, Marjorie Lillian Hall of Deer Isle, and Paula Davenport Michaud of Southwest Harbor; mother-in-law, Ferne Tranton Swanson of Southwest Harbor; brother-in-law, Ernie Swanson of S. Paris; one sister, Geraldine Hall Harris of Buzzards Bay, Mass.; and one brother, Richard Hall; nine grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews; special friends, Bob Webber, Jerry Michaud, Mike Levesque, Bruce Settler, Harry Luhrs, Mike Miller, Larry Duffy and Jack Jordan; and many other dear friends, too many to mention. Hylie was predeceased by his parents, Hylie K. and Thelma (Wallace) Hall Sr.; one daughter, Margaret Hall; and one sister, Francis Hall Lovejoy. Graveside memorial services will be held 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at Hillside Cemetery, Hulls Cove, with the Rev. Ambrose Rolfe officiating.
