NORTHEAST HARBOR – Inez Mary Gray, 89, died at MDI Hospital on Nov. 17, 2004. She was born at home in Somesville, Dec. 27, 1914, one of Forrest and Dolly (Merchant) Dickey’s nine children. In 1930, she married a soft spoken, blue eyed man from Blue Hill, Everett Gray. They settled in Northeast Harbor and raised three children: Betty, Gordon and Mary. Cooking and baking were Inez’s great joys in life. She worked for years in the cafeteria at the Northeast Harbor High School, then moved with her recipes to the new Regional High School in 1968. Thousands of students enjoyed her whoopie pies, kolaches and cakes over the years and for many, Wednesday was “yeast roll day”. She remained at the high school until her late retirement. Inez loved baking for her family, friends and community. While pouring over the latest fancy cookbooks was her hobby, her passion was perfecting good old home-style recipes. She leaves behind two daughters; Betty Parsons of Bar Harbor, with whom she lived her last months, and Mary Farley of Edgartown, Mass.; nine grandchildren, many great-grandchildren and several great-great grandchildren. Inez was predeceased by her husband, Everett; her son, Gordon; and a grandson, Bruce Parsons. Contributions in Inez’s memory may be sent to the Mount Desert Nursing Association, PO Box 397, Northeast Harbor or to the Union Church, Box 555, Northeast Harbor, ME 04662. At Inez’s request, there will be no service. Arrangements by: Jordan-Fernald Funeral Home, 1139 Main St., Mt. Desert.
