CONCORD and FRANKLIN, N.H. – Inza H. Gile, 100, died Aug. 23, 2004, at Pleasant View Center in Concord, N.H. She was born Jan. 15, 1904, in Machias, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Willis M. Hall. She was a graduate of Machias High School, where she played basketball, and of Washington State Normal School, now the University of Maine at Machias. Following college, she taught in the elementary grades of schools in Sherman Station, Concord, Mass., and Durham, N.H. She was married in 1931, to Alonzo R. Gile of Northfield, N.H. They lived in Providence, R.I. and New Bedford, Mass., before returning to New Hampshire, where Mr. Gile established Gile’s Dairy in Franklin in 1940. Following his death in 1961, Mrs. Gile assumed an active role in the business by taking over the management of Gile’s Dairy Bar. Mrs. Gile was involved in many community and state organizations and activities, including the Peabody Home, Spaulding Youth Center and the Visiting Nurse Association. She particularly enjoyed her membership in the Franklin Woman’s Club, which she served as president, the N.H. Federation of Woman’s Clubs, where she held a state office, and in her association with the Franklin United Methodist Church, participating there in many capacities. An achievement of which she was particularly proud was an ascent of Mount Katahdin and the traverse of the “Knife Edge” to Pamola. In addition, Mrs. Gile loved poetry and well into her nineties, she could recite many poems she memorized in her youth. During her teaching career, she enjoyed kindling an interest in poems among her students. She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Erma Buzzell and Mrs. Lilith Bangs of Machias, and Mrs. Gertrude Deuchars of Pasadena, Calif.; two sons, Robert Gile of Concord, N.H., and Bradford Gile of Wolfeboro, N.H.; four grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. There will be no calling hours and services will be private, with a memorial service to be held in the future. In lieu of flowers, donations to the Franklin United Methodist Church, 88 Franklin St., Franklin, NH 03235, or the Tilton School, 30 School St., Tilton, NH 03276 are encouraged. The H.L. Young & Company Memorial, 175 South Main St., Franklin is in charge of arrangements.
