YUMA, Ariz. and EDDINGTON – Ione Jannette Currier Janke, 73, died at home in Yuma, Ariz., Sept. 27, 2004. She was born May 20, 1931, in Bangor. She married Irving August Janke of Loveland, Colo. on Sept. 11, 1949. During their marriage the couple enjoyed traveling in the Caribbean, Mexico, Canada, Columbia, Brazil and almost every state in the U.S. After retiring from the Air Force, the Janke’s settled in Macon, Ga., where they established and ran the largest all breed kennel in the southeast for 23 years. Under their trade name “Jakana” the business expanded to include pet shops, and grooming salons. Upon retirement from the pet business they relocated to Cape Coral, Fla. There she was granted life membership in the Cape Coral Art League. After her husband’s death in 1991, she relocated to Rancho Bernado, Calif. and became active in the surrounding art associations. She also served as president of the North County Society for Fine Arts, Poway, Calif. Her art has hung in many galleries, places of business, and homes of art collectors in the U.S. and abroad. She was accepted in the Del Mar Fine Arts Fair numerous times and sold her work from there. For health reasons she relocated to Yuma, Ariz. in 1997. She became active in the Mountain Shadows Artist Association and was a member of the Desert Artist of Yuma Inc. She displayed her art at the Old Town Gallery in downtown Yuma. Nieces and a nephew in Bangor and in Belleview, Fla. survive her. Her sister, Clarice Currier Strout of Portsmouth, N.H., her brother, James Leonard Currier of Bangor; her parents, James L. and Beatrice Tracey Currier of East Eddington; and her husband, Irvin predeceased her. There will be a viewing 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, and a memorial service 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at Yuma Mortuary, Yuma, Ariz. Graveside services will be held 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2004, at Pine Tree Cemetery in Eddington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to ASPCA Membership and Donor Services, 424 East 92nd St., 4th Floor, New York, NY 10128.
