CASTINE – Irene (Gray) Bowden, 71, died Oct. 19, 2003, at a Bangor hospital, after a short illness. She was born Oct. 31, 1931, in Orland, the daughter of Lewis L. and Florence B. (Brockway) Gray. Irene was employed as a Nurses Aide at the Castine Community Hospital for 29 years. She also did seamstress work for Maine Maritime Academy for 50 years. Irene enjoyed knitting mittens for the children in Castine, was a collector of lighthouses and the new state quarter coins. Irene is survived by one son, David S. Bowden and wife, Brenda, of Bucksport; two daughters, Debi McLaughlin and husband, Robert, of Castine, and Dianna Paine and husband, Mark, of Castine; six grandchildren, Matthew McLaughlin and wife, Angela, Alanda Bowden, Neil Bowden, Ian Paine, Jillian Paine, and Taylor Paine; three great-grandchildren, Bayley, Brinley, and Bradley McLaughlin; two brothers, Joseph Gray and wife, Norma, of Florida, and Alan Gray and wife, Sue, of Vermont; three sisters, Carolyn Gray, Mary Deans and husband, Lloyd, and Jean Joy, all of Orland; one sister-in-law, Judy Gray of Castine; two brothers-in-law, Richard Marston of Florida, and Leland Bowden of Blue Hill; many nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews; and will be sadly missed by her cat, Willie. In addition to her parents, Irene was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth T. Bowden in 1988; one sister, Elois Marston; two brothers, Donald Gray and Leon Gray. Visitation for family and friends will be 6-8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 22, at the Mitchell-Tweedie Funeral Home, 28 Elm St., Bucksport. A graveside memorial service will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, at the Castine Cemetery, Castine, with Rev. Tracy Reeves officiating.
