STONINGTON and ZEPHYRHILLS, Fla. – Irene W. Smith, 86, died Aug. 2, 2004, at the Island Nursing Home. She was born May 4, 1918, in Suffield, Conn., the youngest child of Newell and Edith (Fifield) Whitman. She was a graduate of Stonington High School and the University of Maine. She worked as a bookkeeper for R.K. Barter, R.K. Barter Canneries and Burnham and Morrill. For 20 years, she was employed by Union Trust Co. She was married for 43 years to Robert Smith who died in 1983. Irene loved working in her flower garden, and playing bridge, bingo, dominos, and shuffleboard. She won several shuffleboard tournament cham-pionships while spending winters in Zephyrhills, Fla. Irene was so proud to have five generations in her family. She is survived by her daughter, Edith Ann Bartlett and her husband, Augustus; her son, Stephen Smith and his wife, Nancy; her granddaughters, Dianne Thompson and her husband, David, all of Stonington; April Smith and her fianc?, Davie Milhoan, of Palm Bay, Fla.; her great-grand-children, Matthew Thompson and Jeremy Thompson and his significant other, Nicole Eaton of Stonington; her great-great-grandchildren, Kristin, Nathan, and Dylan, all of Stonington; and her loving companion of 12 years, Avery Robinson of Zephyrhills, Fla. She was also predeceased by her son, Richard, in 1990; her parents; four brothers and two sisters.
