BELFAST – John Norman Mullen, 88, of Belfast, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 10, 2006, at a Bangor hospital. He was born Aug.31, 1917, in Millinocket, the son of John P. and Elsie J. Mullen. He graduated from Stearns High School in Millinocket in 1937, then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II and as a sergeant with the Maine National Guard. He was a trooper with the Maine State Police for 22 years, ending his career as sergeant of Troop D in the Belfast area. He then served four years as chief deputy sheriff in Waldo County under Fred Meservey. He was more than a 50 year member of Monument Lodge No. 96 AF & AM in Houlton, the Waldo Chapter No. 7 R.A.M., the Palestine Commandry No. 14 Knights Templar, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite, the American Legion Post 43, Belfast, the Waldo County Law Enforcement Association, and state and local beagle clubs. After retirement he enjoyed spending time at his camps with family and friends and taking trips throughout the United States and Canada. He also was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed hunting and fly-fishing, especially for Atlantic salmon. He was predeceased by his first wife, Mona Dubay in 1952; his parents and a sister, Jacqueline Melhorn. Norman is survived by his wife of 49 years, Mary; four sons, Ronald and companion, Patricia Wood, of Brooks, John Patrick and wife, Brenda, of Belfast, Douglas Michael of Iowa and Donald Robert of New Hampshire; one daughter, Brenda Barrett and husband, Robert, of Belfast; six grandchildren, John, Amy and Scott Mullen Julie DellaMattera and husband, Ken, Marci Mullen, Brian Barrett, Kevin Barrett and companion, Nicky Dudley; four great-grandchildren, Emerson and Allison DellaMattera, Jeffrey Barrett and Parker Mullen.
