NORTH PORT, Fla., and HAMPDEN – James E. Conley Sr. passed away April 12, 2007, in Venice, Fla. He was born Nov. 22, 1928, in Portland. James served in the U.S. Navy from 1946 to 1948, upon his return he graduated from the University of Maine in 1952 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering. He was employed by Arnold Machinery Co., Central Equipment Co., and was a former president of Maine Good Roads. James was an avid golfer, a member of Penobscot Valley Country Club and Venice East Golf Association. James was a communicant of the Catholic Church in Maine and Florida. He was predeceased by two brothers, John and William Conley; his first wife of 43 years, Ruth Ahern Conley; and his second wife of nine years, Jane Blanchard Conley. James is survived by a sister, Elizabeth Brooks; three children, James E. Conley Jr. and his wife, Gayle, of Hampden, Carol A. Conley of Coco Beach, Fla., and Kathleen Houghtaling and her husband, Darwin, of North Port, Fla.; four grandchildren, Grace Nash, Elizabeth Preston, Matthew and Sarah Hough-taling; two great-grandchildren, Ryleigh and Evander James Conley Preston. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Thursday, May 31, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hamp-den. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated noon Friday, June 1, at Holy Cross Catholic Church, South Portland. After the funeral Mass interment will be at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
