BANGOR – James “Jim” Samuel Bigney died Aug. 17, 2007, at a Bangor hospital. He was the son of Helen Troy Bigney and Samuel Scammon Bigney. Jim grew up in Greenville and was proud of his heritage as a descendent of the Scammons and Bigneys, who were early settlers of the Moosehead area. He attended school in Greenville, Classical High School, Springfield, Mass., Bangor Theological Seminary and the University of Maine. Jim approached life with a very dry Maine humor, fierce New England independence, great scientific curiosity, high ethical standards and a strong sense of social justice. Jim was well known as a TV and radio meteorologist in the Bangor area from the late 1960s to the early 1980s. Prior to that, he worked for the United Way of Penobscot Valley and as an EEG technician. He was elected to two terms on the Bangor City Council, 1970-1976, and served as chair of the public safety committee. After his work as a weatherman, he was a full-time dad to Ben and Sarah. He leaves his wife, Tracy Bronson Bigney; son, Benjamin Scammon Bigney; daughter, Sarah Adams Bigney; brother, Thomas Nagle and wife, Shirley, of Chattanooga, Tenn.; brother, Edmund and wife, Yukiko, of Trenton; cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 23, at Hammond Street Congregational Church, Bangor. A committal service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at Greenville Cemetery.
