MADISON, Ala. – Janice Veano Welch, 88, died peacefully Monday, May 30, 2005, at Huntsville Hospital in Hunts-ville, Ala. She was born July 24, 1916, in Orono, and was raised there. Janice was a graduate of St. Mary’s Catholic High School. She and her husband lived most of their married life in Connecticut where she was involved in many community and social activities. In their early years in Naugatuck, she was a Red Cross volunteer, a member of the Women’s Club, and an actress and singer in the Footlighters Community Theater troupe. She also enjoyed golf and her bridge and antique groups. She was a proud member of the American Legion Auxiliary Post 17 where she served as a past president and a tireless worker in support of their weekly bingo fundraiser. Later, in Cheshire, she enjoyed bridge and bowling groups, helped at St. Bridget’s Church bingo, and volunteered for 28 years driving and shopping for the residents of Elim Park Home. Janice was an avid collector, a wonderful friend, and could often be found traveling across country with her family or beachcombing at Hampton Beach, N.H. Janice was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Charles Franklin Welch; her sisters, Emily Leveille and Bea Marie Veno; and her brother, Elray Veno. She is survived by her beloved daughter, Janice Welch Johnson; son-in-law, Michael E. Johnson; and her cherished grandchildren; grand-daughter, Katharine Emily Johnson; and grandson, Alexander Welch Johnson. A funeral Mass will be held 11 a.m. Saturday at St. John the Baptist Church, Hughes Road, Madison, Ala. Friends of all denominations are welcome to join her family as they celebrate her life. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Habitat for Humanity of Madison County in Janice’s name.
