VEAZIE – Jean C. (Cota) Hamilton, 75, passed away Nov. 30, 2003, due to complications of respiratory disease. She was born March 6, 1928, in Orono, the 11th of 13 children born to Joseph F. and Maude (Hubley) Cota. She was the wife of LCDR Elliott M. Hamilton, who pre-deceased her while serving in his 24th year with the U.S. Navy. Jean was active in Veazie town affairs for many years, having served on the School Board, the Charter Revision Commission, and the Sewer District, where she served for 13 years as clerk and treasurer and 18 years as a trustee. She wrote the history of Veazie under a grant from the CETA program. Jean was a communicant of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Orono, a past member of the Daughters of Isabella, and an auxiliary member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 3177 in Brewer. For 12 years she served as honorary house-mother to the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity at the University of Rhode Island in Kingston, R.I. At their spring formals she presented scholarships to deserving fraternity brothers in Mark’s name. Surviving family members include two daughters, Crystal Hamilton and her husband, Robert King, and their son, Michael of Manchester, Joan and her husband, Brian Perkins, and their son, Jesse, of Veazie; four sisters, Louise Bradbury, Joan King, June Anderson, Ruth Cota; brother, Ross Cota and his wife, Marie, all of Orono; sister-in-law, Louise Cota of Stillwater; brother-in-law, George Hamilton and his wife, Sheila, of Augusta; plus a number of cousins, nieces, and nephews. Besides her husband, she was pre-deceased by her two twin sons, Michael in 1960, and Mark in 1979. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Brookings-Smith, LaBeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono, where private funeral services will be held Thursday with Rev. Joseph Koury, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, officiating. Spring interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono.
