ALLAGASH – Jewel Kelley Leighton, 78, died Monday, July 16, 2007, at Northern Maine Medical Center, Fort Kent. She was born March 3, 1929, in Allagash, the daughter of John and Fern Kelley of Allagash. Jewel lived the majority of her life including her final years, in her beloved Allagash, on the banks of the St. John River, close to those she loved and who loved her. She was a very caring and loving person who loved collecting antiques, baking and making Christmas dinner for her family. She loved to share stories about her children and family over a cup of tea and she loved to laugh. We will miss her dearly. Jewel was predeceased by her son, Neal H. Leighton III; her parents, John and Fern; and by her sister, Cora Sullivan. Jewel is survived by two daughters, Carla Jane Hudson and her husband, Donald, of Millbrook, N.Y., and Della K. Shaw of Sarasota, Fla.; as well as her grandchildren, Scott Hudson and Carrie Hudson-Blood and her husband, Ralph, all of Milford, N.H., Samuel Shaw of Hubert, N.C. and Matthew Shaw and wife, Sharmon, of Suffolk, Va.; great-grandchildren, Ashley Jewel and Breanna Blood, and Dylan and Devin Shaw. She is also survived by her brothers, Guy Kelley and Tyler Kelley and his wife, Leitha, of Allagash; sisters, Fay Horrocks of Fort Kent and Jacqueline Leslie, Susan Snay, both of Eagle Lake, and Jill Carlson and her husband, Joseph, of Harwinton, Conn. A celebration service of Jewel’s life will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, July 21, at the Baptist Church, Allagash, with the Rev. John Dik officiating. A graveside committal will be held after the service. Pallbearers will be Scott Hudson, Wade, Stacey and Timothy Kelley, Tracy O’Leary, and Joseph Carlson. Funeral arrangements are being conducted by the Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent.
