JONESBORO – John J. Whelan, 85, died at his home in Jonesboro, May 17, 2004. He was born May 27, 1918, the son of John J. and Myrna (Peterson) Whelan in Halifax, Nova Scotia. During World War II, John served in the U.S. Army in the Asiatic Pacific Theater, where he took part in the Liberation of the Philippines. In 1980, he retired from Westinghouse in Hyde Park, Mass. He was a member of the Machias Senior Citizens for many years. John is survived by his wife, Susie (Geel) Whelan of Jonesboro; his children, John Whelan Jr. and his wife, Bonnie, of Gilmanton, N.H., Barbara Vindici of Colbrook, N.H. and Donna Cebula of Fitchburg, Mass., Robert Whelan of Townsend, Mass., and Karen Dallvalliere of Ashburnham, Mass.; his stepdaughters, Carolyn S. Urquhart and her husband, Dana, of Jonesboro, and Susie E. Spearin and her husband, Wayne, of Taunton, Mass.; one sister, Mary Marcou of Stark, N.H.; 22 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; four sisters-in-law; and one brother-in-law; one cousin, Robert Watson of Amherst, Nova Scotia; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son, Thomas; and his four brothers, Fred, Arthur, Vincent and Kenneth. Visiting hours will be held 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Bragdon-Kelley-Campbell Funeral Home, 6 Cooper St., Machias. Graveside services will be held 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19, 2004, at Forest Hill Cemetery, Jonesboro, with the Rev. Bernard Brown officiating.
