WOODSTOCK, Vt., – John Marshall Pierce, 68, died Saturday, April 29, 2006, at the Genesis Nursing Home, Lebanon, N.H., where he passed peacefully in his sleep. Mr. Pierce was born in Boston, Mass., son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Marshall Pierce. He was raised in Bangor and attended Deerfield Academy, Middlebury College and the University of Maine. After his father’s death in 1962, he assumed responsibility for the family business in timber and real estate management. In 1965, he married Margarete Elisabeth Wietfeldt of Germany and had two children. They lived in Orono for 12 years before moving to the family home in Pomfret, Vt. He loved spending time at his summer retreat on his lake in Maine, where he was able to enjoy the outdoors, the woods, fly fishing and boating. This, in fact, was his greatest legacy, as he gifted a large portion of property to the state of Maine for future generations to enjoy nature in all its beauty and come to revere it as much as he did. Mr. Pierce is survived by his wife, Margarete Pierce; his daughter, Dianne Pierce Ardinger and her husband, Joseph Ardinger, and their two children, Tyler and Audrey of Concord, N.H.; his son, Andrew and his wife, Trang, of Boston, Mass.; and his sister, Mary Pierce Ridlon of Naples, Fla.; his nephew, Col. David Ridlon of Columbia, Md. There will be a graveside service 11 a.m. Tuesday, May 16, at Mount Hope Cemetery, Bangor. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Thompson Senior Center or the Lucy Mackenzie Humane Society, both in Woodstock, Vt.
