HOULTON – John McCarthy, 78, died July 7, 2006, with family by his side at Houlton Regional hospital. He was born Sept. 8, 1927, in Littleton, the son of Donald and Lucy (Henderson) McCarthy. John attended Houlton schools and was a veteran of World War II. He was a loyal man who worked hard all his life. He worked for Fred Putnam for years on the farm, for Donald Guy on construction and for Houlton Public Works until his retirement. John was a loving and loyal husband for 44 years, a dedicated father, and a true and trusted friend to his brothers and sisters. He was a kind and gentle man to all who knew him. He was a special uncle to his nephews and nieces. They all have very unique and funny stories they could tell. He will truly be missed by all who knew him. The family wishes to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Barry, Gail, Matt and Ashley McCarthy for their care and concern from day one. John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Ruby (Ivey) McCarthy; three children, Brian of Farmington, David and his partner, Buffy, of Houlton, Larry and his wife, Trish, of Houlton; granddaughter, Kelli McCarthy of Houlton; two great-grandchildren; one sister, Marietta Cueykus and her husband, Ed, of Wisconsin; three brothers, Harold McCarthy and his wife, Janice, of Littleton, Arthur McCarthy and his wife, Arlene, of Biddeford, Philip McCarthy and his wife Carole, of Clinton; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents; stepfather, Ralph Cunliffe; one sister, Evelyn Austin; three brothers, Gordon, Earl and Lawrence; stepbrother, Ralphie Cunliffe. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Sunday at Dunn Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Steven Straubel officiating.
