MOUNT DESERT – Joseph Antonio Musetti Sr., 94, died May 12, 2005, at his home in Hall Quarry. He was born Aug. 20, 1910, in Guilford, Conn. and returned to Italy when he was a young boy. He was the son of Amelio and Adele (Chinquante Rossi) Musetti. At a young age, his parents sent him to this country to avoid being drafted into the service. Joseph taught himself to read and write. He came to Hall Quarry when he was 16. Joseph started as a tool carrier in the quarries and went on to be a Derrick Engineer for many years. He also worked for Southwest Boat for nine years and installed a derrick to lift the boats. In the early fifties, he quarried the stone for the Duck Brook arched bridge in Bar Harbor. He quarried hundreds of coping stones that went to Cadillac Mountain. Joe and his wife started Somes Sound View Campground and Cottages. In 1978, he turned the campground over to his sons, but they continued to operate the cottages. They liked seeing the summer people that came to the cottages and campground. He also enjoyed attending all sports events. In early years, Joseph and Althea would walk to Somesville and Southwest Harbor to the dances and they also danced at Trenton. He never returned to Giovagallo, Italy, but his grandson captured the memories of his childhood. They took videos of the area home where Joe was brought up. Joseph is survived by his twin sister, Eugenia, of Parma, Italy; one son, Ronald Musetti and his wife, Sharon, of Hall Quarry; one grandson, Michael Musetti of Hall Quarry; five granddaughters, Tamera Stearns of Miller Falls, Mass., Lynn Hand of Bucksport, Sherri O’Kane of Lindenhurst, Ill., Terri Needham of Trenton, and Maria Mooers of Hall Quarry; eight great-grandchildren, Rachel Allen, Joseph Allen, Whitney Hand, Kayley O’Kane, Mia Musetti, Colin Mooers, Ronald Musetti, Riley Mooers; also, Matthew and Benjamin Ketchen and three cousins.
