ORONO – Joseph Earl Leavitt, 86, died May 2, 2006, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor. He was born Dec. 13, 1919, in Gloucester, Mass., the son of Leslie E. and Mildred (Fowler) Leavitt. Joe served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II stationed in the Pacific Theater. He worked at Penobscot Shoe for many years and retired from Eastern Maine Community College. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Orono, American Legion of Orono, VFW in Old Town, Orono Senior Citizens Club, and the Amateur Radio Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and just being in the outdoors. He had a passion for filming and photography and had great memories of traveling especially in Alaska. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Anita (Paulin) Leavitt of Orono; a son, Richard Leavitt and wife, Melody, of Dedham; a daughter, Jeannine Caulkins and husband, Allen, of Newburgh; five grandchildren, Aaron Leavitt and wife, Shamarie, Nicole Fields, Andrew Trask and wife, Kristy, David Leavitt, Ashley Leavitt; five great-grandchildren, Gabriell Fields-Love, Anthony Trask, Logan Dow, Manuel Fernandez, Eric Fernandez; and a special cousin, Herb Libby of Abbott. He was predeceased by a sister, Geraldine Kuehn. Friends are invited to visit with the family 6-8 p.m. Friday, May 5, at Brookings-Smith, Labeau Chapel, 72 Main St., Orono. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Saturday, May 6, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Orono, with the Rev. Rudolph Leveille officiating. Interment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Orono. Relatives and friends are invited to a reception in the St. Mary’s Church Parish Hall provided by the Daughters of Isabella after the interment.
