NEWTON, Ala. – Joyce “Nani” Humphrey, 81, of 147 South County Rd. 9, Houston County, passed away May 25, 2006, at her residence after a lengthy illness. Mrs. Humphrey was born July 15, 1924, in Willimantic, the daughter of Coney E. and Mildred Knowles Packard, both of whom predeceased her. Her husband, John E. Gormley, died in World War II when she was 19. She remarried and enjoyed 55 years with Burleigh L. Humphrey. Mr. Humphrey died Oct. 4, 2001, leaving her to cherish the memories of the loving years they had together. Nani was the friend and neighbor we all wish we could have forever. She loved to cook and made sure that her extended family was frequently treated to the fruits of her kitchen. The smell of baking bread will forever stir the memory of her in those she loved and who loved her in return. She is survived by two sons, John E. Gormley of Dotha, Ala. and Omar Lewis Humphrey and his wife, Carol Baker Humphrey, of Pensacola, Fla.; her sisters, Elizabeth Copeland and Eila Packard of Bangor; three grandchildren, Donna Gormley Jackson, Kelli Gormley Mitchell, Brian Lewis Humphrey; and four great-granddaughters. She also leaves many nieces, nephews and cousins and several special friends from the community in which she lived. Memorial service will be held 7 p.m. Tuesday, May 30, at Byrd Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Doug Newsome officiating. The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions be made to Wiregrass Hospice, Inc., P.O. Drawer 2127, Dothan, AL 36302.
